Personally I like to put my subjects in a background but the majority of clients prefer a plain, even coloured background. Admittedly artists need to charge more for a detailed background but personally I think it’s worth it. A painting that captures a pet in a familiar background like the garden or the lounge or at a favourite walking location can really bring out its character because the owner can relate to the special shared moments.

As you can see below ‘Molly’ captured on the beach is loving her day at the seaside and this type of painting

tells the story of maybe wonderful afternoons spent at a favourite spot or a great family holiday you will always remember for all sorts of reasons.

That said a plain background can really help to focus on the unique features of a beloved pet without distraction but a familiar setting can make all the difference in creating a unique portrait.
